The novel coronavirus has had a massive impact on the way businesses operate from a day in day out perspective. In the wake of the coronavirus the rise of cloud migration has spiked beyond its typical pace. With government orders causing many employees to adapt to a remote working environment, the importance of strong cloud-based business solutions has never been more crucial to keeping your business profitable during these challenging times. For many companies, these plans were already in motion well before the pandemic closures occurred; however, many companies were also in the initial stages of planning for their migration to the cloud environment. This accelerated some companies plans while forcing others to run return on investment forecasts for years ahead since this migration was now necessary whereas before it was viewed as a potential solution.

While the benefits of the cloud are well documented, many organizations still remain quite cautious. With cloud databases, many companies are not taking the “all-in” approach due to considerations related to price, compatibility, and security concerns according to the MariaDB survey in partnership with Propeller Insights. This survey included 559 enterprise engineering and IT professionals. All respondents were manager level of higher from the US, UK, France, and Germany. Specifically, the factors surveyed were reported at:

Factor Percentage of Respondents
Security 73%
Price 46%
Compatibility 45%
Scalability 35%
Migration 33%
Lack of Multicloud Offerings 21%

In addition, this survey found that as an effect of the coronavirus pandemic 40% of businesses are accelerating their current cloud migration plans. 75% of respondents identified concern over a second wave, along with 51% planning to move additional applications to a cloud-based environment in preparation. 40% of respondents identified the expectation of their respective companies soon being fully based in the cloud environment. This shows that the importance of guidance from cloud migration experts has never been more crucial for companies looking to begin, adapt, or accelerate their efforts in migrating both data and applications to cloud-based solutions. There are countless horror stories of companies attempting cloud migration without external consultation, resulting in massive losses. Now is not the time to risk the future of your company with a cloud migration plan that has not been guided and thoroughly vetted by subject matter experts.

When considering the ramifications that coronavirus has had on the way businesses operate, it’s almost impossible to think that things will ever return to “business as usual” with respect to your business operating the way it did before this pandemic. For many employees, the benefits of maintaining their levels of productivity while working remotely has been an eye-opening experience that they are hoping their employers take note of. This is something that can be very cost effective from an employer standpoint, since it will lower operating costs for on-site services and facilities. However, if your company is behind the times in cloud infrastructure and adaptive resources, chances are your IT department has been flooded with employees calling in for assistance. If your business is either in the beginning phases or still planning for their cloud migration, it’s important to ensure the business you partner with can automate your cloud journey and get you to the cloud fast.
